SET DESIGN

AUDIENCE AREA

My intention was to keep the integrity of the classic show by integrating the new design into the existing set. Backlit surfaces, rich textures, and multiple layers were used to create a dynamic and lifted stage experience. Large LED columns wrapped the audience and chased in any color. Keeping with the iconic ‘Price’ vibe lightbox daisies were designed in various sizes and programmable in any color to create movement and depth. Rich layers of satin drape with a high fold count softened edges. The layout was specifically designed around primary shots, close-ups, wide and jib shots. The final touch was updating bidder rows with LED lightbox surrounds to create flexibility in color that would work with any design.

SET DESIGN

I look for inspiration in architecture, creative construction methods and innovative design ideas when creating new sets and meeting the challenges of each job’s uniqueness. The primary challenge here was to fit the new set over an already existing set. Along side this, the design required that Amber Rose had easy accessibility to her audience, and room to roll a band on and off stage. Using extremely precise design and creative problem solving to maximize space and layout, I was able to successfully meet the brief. It was important to me that the set reflects her personality, set a tone for the show, and allows her to interact. Lighting was integral to the design in achieving this balance. Floor-to-ceiling backlit window walls were created featuring the Los Angeles skyline, lined with palm trees. Drawing inspiration from a photograph of Amber in a laced-up top, I designed LED-lit columns wrapped with black detail which added texture, depth, and personality. A two-tiered platform with a custom-designed printed MUVA graphic and LED edges glowed and grounded the set. The final result was sexy, rich, and full of texture.

MAIN STAGE

The client brief was a set that was modern and intimate while at the same time could command an audience of up to 750 people. Set in the Napa Valley I was inspired by the beautiful surroundings and the blend of the contemporary and traditional architecture of Napa wineries. Layering LED lightboxes with warm wood slats, subtle scumbled textured walls and elegant wallpaper allowed for flexibility with color and lighting. I used a white Formica stage floor that dazzled under lights while creating a neutral landing pad for the tone-on-tone furniture. The 750-seated audience was in close proximity and wrapped 180 degrees around the stage. Two large rear projection screens flanked both sides of the set for optimal viewing. The style was elegant and casual with a combination of warm wood tones, soft whites, and hints of metallic gold for refinement and sophistication.

SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN

Nine hexagon-framed monitors curve to create an animated backdrop of movement and texture. The negative spaces are LED light boxes programmed to become stylistic accents to match any graphic displayed or game played on the turntable.
